Kenshin and Sojiro, these two performed quite hard practices but they had enough ‘room for dessert’; acrobatic actions such as flip-flop. Sojiro was practicing flip-flop against the wall again and again. The first time he managed to do it, he was so happy that…

Flipped Manga Makes Me Flip Out

When I first got into manga, I had to retrain my eyes and brain to read the panels and dialogue from right to left. This took several months of hard work, but in the end I was rewarded and was able to read manga easily.

I find this hard work is undermined when I read a manga that has been flipped. Half the time, I don’t realize a manga has been flipped until I’m maybe a quarter way through the story and then I can think back on why the dialogue seemed so strange.

But really, if I as an American reader, can train my eyes and brain to read from right to left, other Ameircan readers can do the same. There is no need to fundamentally change a story by flipping it just to appeal to lazy people.

Flipping manga can damage things by getting important pictures backward, kanji and hiragana backward or even make things look funny, such as showing swordsmen holding their sword left-hand dominant (most samurai were right handed). In Inuyasha, Miroku’s kazaana was in his right hand, but in the flipped manga, it was changed to his left.

I really wish people would leave manga alone and have enough faith in the readers to retrain our eyes and brains to follow the story as it was originally intended to flow.

Arigatou for reading. *bows*

Rurouni Kenshin cast to attend sequel premiere in Manila

Rurouni Kenshin stars Sato Takeru, Takei Emi, and Aoki Munetaka, and director Otomo Keishi will attend the premiere of Rurouni Kenshin Kyoto Inferno in Manila, Philippines. The red carpet premiere will be held on August 6 at SM Megamall. A press conference is also scheduled on August 7 at Glorietta.

The announcement was made by President and Representative Director of Warner Entertainment Japan Inc. William Ireton and General Manager of Warner Bros. Philippines Francis Soliven in a press release.

Ireton was quoted, saying, “We are thrilled to bring director Keishi Otomo and castmembers Takeru Satoh, Emi Takei and Munetaka Aoki to Manila so they can personally thank and engage with the loyal fans of Rurouni Kenshin. The Philippines is a very important market for the franchise as proven by the outstanding box-office success in Manila of the first Rurouni Kenshin film in 2013.”
